Venture Scouts: Making Pens

Mission Peak Hike 11-22-08

We will be having a "Rimrover" hike to Mission Peak on Sat.Nov.22 at 8:30 AM, weather permitting. We will meet at the chapel and carpool to Ohlone College where the hike begins and ends. About 6.5 miles roundtrip.

Rimrover Hikes are a Scout hiking program that consist of 6 different hikes here in the Bay Area. I've attached a document explaining the program along with the Mission Peak info. There is a patch awarded every time a hike is completed. Very Cool.

All Boy Scouts and Webelos are welcome as well as any parents who think they can keep up with the Scouts.

You will need to bring a lunch, water, good shoes, hat, uniform, and Scout Spirit.

Scouting for Food

The Scouting for Food event will take place Sat. Nov 8th and Sat Nov 15th.

On the 8th. we will post the door hangers in the area designated in green on the attached map. We will meet at the church parking lot at 9 AM and get back between 1 and 1:30.

On the 15th. we will pick up the bags of food left out on the doorsteps in the same neighborhood we left the door hangers. We will meet at the church parking lot a 9 AM and get back about 1:30 - 2:00.

This is an official BSA Service Project and the boys need to be in uniform and with plenty of Scout Spirit. We will need one adult volunteer with a car for every 4 Boy Scouts participating.

Meeting Notice:
An informational meeting on the 2010 National Jamboree for Scouts and their parents will be held at the San Francisco Bay Area Council Youth Leadership Training Center (Scout Office), 1001 Davis Street, San Leandro on Thursday, September 25, 2008 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM.

This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about the Jamboree and to sign up, if interested. The Council will send 3 full Troops totaling 108 Scouts and 12 adults. Once the 108 slots are filled, then the Scouts will be placed on a wait-list. Due to the 100th Anniversary, early sign-up is strongly recommended.

The National Jamboree:
Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, created the idea of holding a large encampment of Scouts and leaders to celebrate Scouting in England. He called it a jamboree.

Since 1937, the Boy Scouts of America has held National Scout Jamborees for Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout councils throughout the United States. Nearly 650,000 Scouts and leaders have hiked the trails, paths, and roadways since the first jamboree was held at the base of the Washington Monument on the Mall in our nation’s capital.

The 2010 National Scout Jamboree brings together Scouts from across the country for 10 days of adventurous activities, memorable events, and friendship on a site big enough to accommodate tens of thousands of Boy Scouts. In a few hours on July 26th, 2010, over 43,000 Scouts and leaders will assemble at Fort AP Hill, Virginia, in a city of over 18,000 tents and 3,600 patrol kitchens. Very few Scouts have the opportunity to go to a Jamboree and because this is the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouts of America, those that do attend will look back at this Jamboree as something they will remember for a life-time.

The Tour:
Approximately 5 days before the Jamboree, the San Francisco Bay Area Council Contingent will 2010 National Jamboree Celebrating 100 years of Boy Scouts of America Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia July 26 - August 4, 2010 leave the Bay Area to tour the East Coast with stops in Philadelphia, Gettysburg, and Washington, DC prior to the Jamboree. Details are still being worked out, but when Scouts to previous Jamborees have been asked, they highlight the Tour with equal enthusiasm to the Jamboree.

The Cost:
Fees are planned to be $2,800 for Scouts and $1,800 for leaders. In addition, each Scout needs to have 3 complete uniforms and a Scout jacket. The only spending money needed is for souvenirs and snacks and should be budgeted at about $250 to $300. For budgeting, the total cost will be approximately in the $3,500 range.

Apply Now:
The 100th Anniversary National Jamboree is a once in a lifetime experience. It is an opportunity to make friends from through-out the United States, to gain a better appreciation of what Boy Scouts is all about, and to have fun in the best traditions of Scouting.

Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must be at least First Class Scouts. They must have completed the sixth grade or be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2010, but not have reached their 18th birthday by August 4, 2010. All Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must participate in a pre-jamboree training experience; file a complete Personal Health and Medical Record, No.
67-34412, prior to the pre-jamboree training; have been active in a troop or team for at least six months prior to July 1, 2010; and be approved by the unit leader and local council.

This racoon and her 3 babies were completely unafraid of Bishop Lee and me! They tore into our box during the night and I even walked right up to her before she took off. crazy!

Klondike Derby Pack Check and Dinner Planning!

Next Wed (2/27/08) we'll be having a pack check for the Klondike Derby (Fri-Sat that same week - see calendar below). Bring your pack, fully loaded according to the sheets we handed out a few weeks ago. If you have lost you list, please see this one here:

NOTE: if you miss this pack check, you won't be allowed to go on the camping trip unless you have a life-altering event happening that evening. Also, if your pack fails, you will still have some time to get the items you need but MAKE SURE YOU DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

CAUTION: DO NOT rely on the equipment in the scouting closet to get you through the weekend! That can be pulled in case of an emergency but should only be used as a backup if you aren't able to bring your own equipment.

After the pack check, you'll be planning meals and will be given assignments for various foodstuffs to bring. Please remember to bring it or the whole troop will suffer.

In case you haven't noticed the calendar lately, we're going diving this Saturday at Diver Dan's in Santa Clara.

Things Each Scout NEEDs for Saturday:

Signed and complete permission form/medical release (ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED)

Details on the trip:
We are leaving from the church on Saturday at 9:00am. Our appointment in Santa Clara is at 9:45am.
We expect the class to end at about 12:30pm.
Volunteer drivers would be greatly appreciated and you're welcome to dive as well if you come. Please call Noa Tu'itavuki if you are able to drive and would like to go.

Photography Merit Badge

All those who attended tonight's mutual (I know who you are) are almost done with this merit badge. In order to complete the merit badge, each Scout must do ONE of the following:

1. Produce a picture story using the photojournalistic technique of documenting an event. Share your plan with your counselor and get your counselor's input and approval before you proceed. Then, using either a film camera or a digital camera, produce your approved picture story. Process your images and select eight to 12 images that best tell your story. Arrange your images in order, then mount the prints on a poster board. If you are using digital images, you may create a slide show on your computer or produce printouts for your poster board. Share your picture story with your counselor.

2. Choose a topic that interests you to photograph for an exhibit or display. Get your counselor's approval, then photograph (digital or film) your topic. Process your images. Choose 20 of your favorite images and mount them on poster board. Share your display with your counselor. If you are using digital images, you may create a slide show on your computer or produce printouts for your poster board.

February Activities and Opportunities to Serve

We're so glad that so many of you were able to attend the temple the past few weeks. If you were unable to make it in January, set a goal to come in the near future. Our next "scheduled" day is Saturday, March 8th.

Saturday morning we need your help to fulfill our assignment from the Stake Presidency. We have been asked to set up the chairs at the Decoto building for this weekend's Stake Conference. Please be at the Decoto Building at 9am, Saturday February 9th. If everyone comes it shouldn't take very long.

Lastly, we have some fun events coming up including the scuba diving merit badge and the Klondike Derby. Please review the calendar for further information.

Did you know your "San Francisco Bay Area Council area" is made up of four different "District areas"?
Did you know those areas are Tres Ranchos, Peralta, Mission Peak and Twin Valley?
And did you know YOU are part of Tres Ranchos District?

Did you know Tres Ranchos District holds monthly meetings where Volunteers just like YOU try to continually make YOUR District better by providing Unit commissioners, events, new membership, training opportunities, encourage advancement & camping such as summer camp and camporees?
This meeting is called the Tres Ranchos "District Operating Committee meeting" or "D.O.C."

Turns out YOU can be a BIG help by simply attending these monthly meetings...
and by doing so help at the District level! YOU can simply come, listen, participate and provide ideas! Who knows...YOUR idea may be THEE brilliant idea of the year that helps changes our whole District for the better! Or you can come help with one of the Committees and get a bit more "hands on"!

Please figure some way you can squeeze this meeting into your schedule...
your efforts sure will be appreciated...and will ultimately be helping a lot of YOUR youth, Scouters and everyone who belongs to YOUR District..

This is definitely a case of "the more is the merrier"! D.O.C. meetings are currently held at the SFBAC headquarters on Davis Street @ 7:30 pm on the second Wednesday of each month.

The Young Men participated with their families in the Union City Ward "Make-a-Difference Day" activity today. We planted trees and bushes for a local park with the help of the city. Everyone had a great time and we all had the opportunity of serving the community, which is always fun.

Multi Stake Fireside with Susan W. Tanner

We are thrilled to announce that Susan W. Tanner, the Young Women's General President, will be speaking at our upcoming multi-stake YM/YW fireside. The fireside will take place on Sunday, October 21st at 7:00pm. All youth ages 12-18 are encouraged to attend.

Given the anticipated attendance, the fireside will be held at the Oakland Interstake Center.

Don't miss this great (Hayward Stk YM) activity for Varsity and Venturing age YM

A reminder about the Stake Venturing Activity (age 14 and up) scheduled for next Tuesday, Sept 25!

It will be at the Hayward Plunge (24176 Mission, Hayward) indoor swimming facility!!!
There will be some light instruction regarding lifesaving, a sample drill, and discussion regarding related careers, then some "play" time. The pool will be all ours, so come and join the fun!!!

Please meet at the Plunge just before 6:30pm with the young men (and leaders, if you like) dressed in their swim clothes under their street clothes. Please bring a bag with a towel, clean underwear (and where they can put their wet swimsuit at the end of the activity).

Each ward should arrange to bring / return home their own young men. Again, please arrive before 6:30pm. After swimming, we will have light refreshments and should be through between 8:30 and 9pm.

Please let one of your leaders know if you will be attending BY SUNDAY. (You can even leave a comment here) The stake needs to know who will be attending so they will have enough lifeguards and refreshments. We can also arrange carpooling efforts.

Troop Leadership Elections Next Week!

There will be 2 patrols in our troop and the members of each will be based on the following criteria:

1. Boys working towards their Eagle will be members of the Boy Scout Patrol
2. Boys who have earned their Eagle or who have received permission from the Scoutmaster (usually around the age of 15) will be members of the Venture Scout Patrol.

In order to better organize our activities and roles, we are holding troop and patrol leadership elections next Wednesday night at Mutual. Please attend and find out the various positions available within the troop by visiting Scouting.org

Scouting Activity Framework

For planning purposes with the youth, we are following the general schedule outlined below:

1st and 2nd Wednesdays = Scout Nights – which means working on rank advancements/merit badges the first and completing on the second and/or troop/patrol meetings. At these meetings the outdoor activity for the month is to be planned.
3rd Friday/Saturday = Outdoor Activity – this can be camping, hiking, fishing, bonfire, rock climbing, coastal trip, nature activity or whatever the boys want to plan but should have a scouting focus and a purpose.
3rd Wednesday = Combined Activity
4th Wednesday = Meaningful Service Night
5th Wednesday = Sports Night (These happen about once a quarter. We can play sports on other nights if the activity wraps up early).

All activities are being planned by the youth leaders; meaning that the adults are offering possible activities but the youth are making the decisions and assignments. We are here to support and guide, the youth are the real leaders.
